Last Christmas, we sent out a newsletter called "the little hands behind the Christmas miracle."
It was about all the helping hands that make our socks a gift that adds to the magic of Christmas. We dedicated our message to the French literary great Joseph Kessel, to the Italian workshops that knit our socks, and to the festive logistics teams and postal workers that make Christmas happen. We also wanted to thank your hands for playing your part by giving our socks as gifts!
This year, we wanted to talk less about the individual cogs behind Christmas, and more about the big player to whom we have entrusted part of our company’s destiny. We’re talking about Shopify, a Canadian e-commerce platform whose name probably doesn’t ring any Christmas bells.
Shopify is a tech-giant worth $200 billion according to the financial papers. Shopify works quietly behind the scenes to empower millions of businesses to sell their wares online. Our deal with Shopify is not without complications: we put all our ecommerce eggs in one basket and the price, while not exorbitant, is substantial, and the selling framework is quite rigid.
But behind these constraints lies peace of mind! Before Shopify, we were bogged down by technical considerations that we didn’t fully understand. We were caught in a catch-22 situation: we wanted media exposure, but feared a sudden influx of traffic that our servers could not handle.
Now, our site can handle all the traffic of the legendary Parisian department store ‘Le Bon Marché’ on the Saturday before Christmas, while still letting you browse our site in peace - like driving on an empty highway. This technical feat, which allows websites around the world to move at lightning speed is nothing short of a miracle. That is the magic of Shopify, breathtakingly efficient technology.
But this tech-magic is only a tool that facilitates logistics. It is not the source of Christmas cheer. Christmas cheer does not come through fibre-optic cables, and nothing beats the feeling of a real smile. It’s up to each of us to make that happen!
