# Merino Wool Socks: Origin of the Material

The wool socks we offer are knitted from what is called merino wool. Merino wool gets its name from merino sheep. As you might have guessed, merino wool comes from the white fleece of sheep that grows naturally and is then sheared and processed before being knitted, especially to make our merino wool socks.

Merino sheep originate from Spain and were later imported to Australia and New Zealand. It is in Oceania that merino sheep farming reached its peak, notably thanks to the favorable climatic conditions for growing high-quality wool. They are known for their thick, soft, and curly fleece, which produces wool fibers that are high quality, durable, and silky on the skin.

And no, merino wool is not from our grandmothers’ era! Merino wool has been used for millennia. The Babylonians were the first to distinguish between sheep raised for food and those raised for their fleece. It was only in the Middle Ages, and later during the Industrial Revolution, that the textile industry truly embraced merino wool to make clothing… including merino wool socks!

# Characteristics of Merino Wool Socks

Merino wool socks are ideal for facing cold winter days in all types of shoes. Indeed, there are many thicknesses of merino wool socks. Among the advantages of wool are the following:

Natural and durable merino wool: wool is a 100% natural animal material that, consequently, has particularly durable fibers;

Antibacterial material: wool fibers have a textured, scale-like surface that prevents bacteria (which cause bad odors) from sticking. Thus, wool fibers breathe and do not retain bad odors... even in case of foot sweat! Men’s merino wool socks therefore let feet breathe without sticking;

Thermoregulatory and insulating properties: in addition to wool’s antibacterial properties, it has thermoregulatory qualities. Wool fibers contain tiny air pockets that retain body heat. Merino wool socks naturally insulate the feet: they keep feet warm in winter and cool in summer. Wool can also absorb up to 35% of its weight in water. Combined with their insulation capabilities, merino wool socks stay continuously dry because sweat moisture dries faster thanks to the body heat retained by the material!

Softness, flexibility, and lightness: wool is a natural material with very fine fibers, which explains the silky appearance of the socks and their flexibility. The 100% natural origin of the wool also gives it a soft and plush feel: merino wool socks do not itch or scratch!

Fun fact: the finer and smaller the wool fiber diameter, the more prized the wool! Indeed, it is a sign of quality and wool that will be soft, silky, and flexible.

# Our Ranges of Merino Wool Socks

We offer different ranges of mid-calf wool socks:

  • Merino wool socks: these are the thinnest wool socks to wear in winter! Their fineness allows you to wear them comfortably in all your dress shoes, even the narrowest ones.
  • Super-durable men's wool socks: the Mazarin super-durable wool range socks are by far the warmest and most durable available! It is the blend of natural merino wool and very resistant polyamide that gives them this particular robustness. Super-durable wool socks are ideal for city walkers or simply if durability is your top priority.
  • Wool & cashmere: if you are looking for particularly warm and soft wool socks, the wool & cashmere blended range is made for you. The smooth appearance of the socks enhances their soft and silky feel in addition to their insulating capacity.

# Caring for Your Merino Wool Socks

Wool is a very easy material to care for! Although it is delicate, it washes very well in the machine: simply wash your merino wool socks on a special wool or delicate cycle to avoid too strong a spin, preferably in cold water. For drying, favor flat drying to allow the wool fibers to regain their original shape and have socks that look like new after each wash!

Note: with advances in material treatments, it is now possible to wash some wools in the machine at 40° on less delicate cycles. This is the case for the Mazarin super-durable mid-calf wool socks, specially treated to withstand washing at 40° (and even drying mistakes... in the tumble dryer!).
