# Features of High Cashmere Socks

High cashmere socks are the warmest socks available (after vicuña, of course). Why?

  • thanks to their material: cashmere is a natural material (hair from cashmere goats) known for its thermal properties that insulate against the cold and for its softness. High cashmere socks are therefore ideal for protecting your feet from winter temperatures, whether in the city or in the mountains;
  • and their height: these high socks are mid-calf length, reaching just below the knee. They cover the entire calf and provide better insulation.

They are also the softest: cashmere is an animal fiber that comes from the undercoat of cashmere goats, an undercoat as soft as down! The fibers obtained from these natural hairs retain this softness, which you then find in your socks.

Fun fact: did you know that the first high cashmere socks ever made date back to the 14th century? Now you do! This pair was a gift from an Iranian poet to the King of Kashmir during a visit to the region of the same name.

# Origin of the Cashmere in High Cashmere Socks

Contrary to popular belief, cashmere is not the name of the animal that provides the cashmere hair! The cashmere material gets its name from the region where it is processed: Kashmir, or Kashmire, is located between India, China, and Pakistan. This region has the most ancient expertise in processing and knitting cashmere hair.

Cashmere is obtained from the undercoat of hair that Capra Hircus goats, now called cashmere goats, produce in winter to protect themselves from the cold. These animals originate from the high plateaus of the Himalayas where temperatures can drop to -40°: their coat is their only source of warmth. This explains the thermal and insulating properties of cashmere!

Note: Undercoat means fineness: the cashmere hairs used to knit the fiber are extremely fine. This fineness gives the material all its quality. You can recognize beautiful high cashmere socks by the fineness and length of the fiber used. Indeed, the longer the fibers used for knitting, the stronger they are.

Fun fact: it is thanks to two Frenchmen that the first cashmere products appeared in Europe in the 19th century! Captivated by this sublime material discovered during a trip to Asia, Jean-Baptiste Decrétot and Guillaume Louis Terneaux decided to bring cashmere to France and Europe to knit it and create a trade. As a 100% French brand, we can only be proud of these origins!

# Ranges of High Cashmere Socks

There are several ranges of high cashmere socks. At Mes Chaussettes Rouges, mid-calf cashmere socks are available in 4 different ranges depending on their composition (pure cashmere or blended) and their properties and uses.

100% Cashmere High Socks: these socks are the warmest of all our high cashmere sock ranges. Their 100% natural composition enhances the natural insulating effects of cashmere. They are also very soft. This Bresciani range is available in only 4 colors.

85% Cashmere Mid-Calf Socks: By far the thickest socks we offer, these high cashmere socks are plush, fluffy, and warmer than any other sock. They are ideal for wearing in the countryside, mountains, après-ski, or even at home for a guaranteed cozy effect.

The cashmere & wool socks: Cashmere is one type of wool, merino wool is another. The combination of these two insulating wools results in particularly warm high (mid-calf) socks.

They have very good support on the leg and are of an ideal medium thickness for city shoes (ankle boots, boots, sneakers). The little extra? The absence of ribs on these socks further enhances the softness when worn.

The cashmere & silk socks: the combination of silk and cashmere results in extremely soft and fine socks with a silky appearance and a fluffy touch. These socks are unmatched in terms of comfort, warmth, and softness for those looking for fine socks in winter!

And if you’re unsure, discover our sets of 3 cashmere socks or 5 mixed cashmere socks!

Note: a single cashmere goat produces only 150 g of material, which explains why cashmere is quite rare... and expensive. Blending cashmere with other materials allows combining the advantages of these materials and also sometimes makes the products more accessible.

# Care: high cashmere socks can also be machine washed

Cashmere is a rare material and, like all natural fibers, quite delicate.

But first, know that unlike delicate materials that prefer dry cleaning, cashmere loves water. The more you wash your high cashmere socks in contact with water, the more they will look like new. Indeed, when in contact with water, cashmere fibers contract and regain their natural shape as they dry.

Here are our care tips for your cashmere socks:

  • Machine wash: choose a wool or other very delicate cycle, preferably cold, with a spin speed of no more than 600 rpm;
  • By hand: soak the socks in cold to lukewarm water with a little detergent, gently knead your socks so the fibers contract naturally without deforming;
  • Drying: socks should be air-dried flat so the pairs regain their original shape – tumble drying is prohibited!
