Where does the softness of a cotton sock come from?

The softness of a cotton sock can be explained by two factors:

Its appearance: a smooth sock has a fluffier feel because it is neater;
The treatment of the fibers: each cotton thread, before being used for knitting, is generally treated by a technique called mercerization. This process involves burning off the fiber ends that stick out from the thread to give it a cleaner and shinier appearance and feel. Thus, non-mercerized socks are more matte and especially softer.

As mentioned earlier, a cotton sock is known for its softness. The softness of the cotton sock protects the skin from friction (hypoallergenic material) and ensures a comfortable sensation thanks to its fluffy texture. A cotton sock is also lighter and more flexible: cotton is a breathable material that lets feet breathe. The fibers of a cotton pair are long, making them more durable and also providing a certain flexibility to the sock.

Ribbed Cotton Socks

Generally, Mazarin’s quality cotton socks are made from 100% Scottish yarn, a premium mercerized Egyptian cotton. But for some pairs, the cotton is unmercerized! This cotton fiber finishing technique makes the yarn softer and therefore, after knitting, the cotton sock is fluffier. Men’s unmercerized cotton socks are available in mid-calf (high) and ankle (short) lengths.

Organic Cotton Socks Without Elastic

The Egyptian cotton used by Mazarin comes from sustainable farming that cultivates cotton to limit its water needs. For example, organic cotton is used for the non-compressing sock range: it is grown naturally, without fertilizers, to reduce the environmental impact of its cultivation.

These socks have no elastic at the top edge to avoid tightening the leg. The elastic is distributed along the entire length of the sock to hold the leg firmly without ever squeezing it.
