Gammarelli socks, tailor to the popes in Rome since 1798, are known because they were originally designed for the Vatican clergy.

Each colour of sock refers to a rank: white for the Pope, purple for the bishops, red for the cardinals and black for the priests.

They are available in wool or cotton lisle and also in mid-calf.

# The Gammarelli Brand

Founded in 1798, the family-run Gammarelli tailoring workshop is located in Rome in a small shop near the Pantheon. This house is renowned for the quality of its socks and the perfection of its finishes. For six generations now, the Gammarelli family has faithfully cared for the old wooden counter of their Roman shop, covered with sumptuous fabrics.

# What is Gammarelli’s specialty?

Gammarelli specializes in making ecclesiastical garments and is the official and exclusive supplier to the popes. When the pope appoints new cardinals, a purple outfit is made for each of them. It is for this use that the famous red socks were made. Hence the commonly accepted nickname "the Pope’s socks," although the color of socks worn by the Pope is white. Besides clergy, famous people also wear Gammarelli socks, such as François Fillon and Edouard Balladur, among others.

Entirely knitted with natural materials, Gammarelli socks are made from Scottish thread or very soft merino wool. The 100% Scottish thread socks are available as mid-calf or crew length, while the merino wool ones only come in mid-calf.
