Why Are Solid Socks the Most Durable?

Solid socks combine the best natural materials with synthetic fibers. Indeed, natural materials provide a quality sock with interesting properties (thermal insulation, exceptional feel, material appearance, etc.). Synthetic materials (notably polyamide and elastane) allow for very durable socks that resist wear and friction, lasting longer and deteriorating less over time.

We know our customers prefer socks with the maximum amount of natural materials, but if we select models with these synthetic fibers, it’s because they offer undeniable advantages in terms of durability and sock fit:

  • Polyamide: very robust materials originally used for boat mooring lines. You can be sure your socks aren’t going overboard anytime soon!
  • Elastane: it gives a smooth and neat appearance to solid socks, which also gain flexibility and therefore better hold on the leg.

The key is to find the perfect natural & synthetic blend to create solid socks without losing the benefits of natural materials, their look, and their feel. Discover our selection below!

The Range of Solid Socks

We offer several ranges of solid socks that differ by composition, patterns, etc. Here are all the solid socks:

Mazarin’s super-solid socks: the most durable socks available are undoubtedly those from Mazarin’s super-solid range;

  • Made from super-solid Scottish yarn or super-solid wool, these socks blend 68 to 72% natural material with 26 to 30% polyamide for reinforcement, and 2% elastane. The Scottish yarn models are perfect for year-round wear, while the merino wool models are ideal for cold seasons.
  • The advantage of these solid socks is that, besides being obviously very robust over time (few actually end up with holes!), they also have excellent leg hold.

Note: Mazarin’s super-solid range is of medium thickness and therefore perfectly suitable for dress shoes (even narrow ones!).

Wool & cotton socks: Mazarin also offers another very durable range, for winter only, which combines two natural materials in the same pair—Scottish yarn and wool—with synthetic fibers (polyamide and elastane). The combination of wool and Scottish yarn gives these solid socks a very soft and neat appearance with warm, insulating, and breathable properties that let feet breathe. Their little extra? The color ranges offered.

Proof of the Durability of Solid Socks

To test the wear resistance of solid socks, we subjected them to the Martindale test, especially for Mazarin’s super-solid range. This is a globally recognized abrasion resistance test for fabrics, performed by a machine that rubs the fabric against a piece of wool or sandpaper. The test is measured in “Martindale cycles,” allowing comparisons between different socks.

This world-renowned wear test was applied to the Super-solid range, which achieved the best abrasion resistance results among a sample of 15 pairs from premium brands. That’s nearly 49,000 cycles, a result that can’t be converted into a number of steps but corresponds to very intensive use of the material. So, are you convinced? (If you only believe what you wear, take the plunge!)

Maintaining the Durability of Your Solid Socks Through Washes

Certainly, the durability of solid socks makes their care and longevity easier. But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t take care of them! Here are some care tips to best preserve their fibers and properties:

  • Solid socks in Scottish yarn: you can machine wash your solid socks on a normal cycle (30 or 40° with a standard spin up to 1300 rpm). For drying, you can use a tumble dryer without any problem (although air drying is recommended);
  • Solid wool socks: they require machine washing on a special wool or hand wash cycle, preferably cold, with a very gentle spin (600 rpm) to avoid felting. For drying, air dry flat to allow the fibers to regain their natural shape and maintain thickness.

Note: the wool used for Mazarin’s super-solid wool range has been treated to withstand washing at 40° to save the day if you accidentally toss them in with cotton… But don’t overdo it either!
