Where Do Women's Wool Socks Come From

Wool is a material made from the fiber of animal fleece such as goats, sheep, camels, or rabbits. The quality of the wool depends on the animal that produces it, the thickness of its coat, the environment in which it is raised, and so on.

Sheep's wool is the most common because sheep easily adapt to different climates around the world. Shearing takes place once a year (sometimes twice) in the spring, when their coat is particularly dense. Once sheared, the wool is cleaned and then carded. What is carding? It is a process that involves separating the wool fibers and removing the last impurities using a card, a comb with a board covered in curved steel points. The fibers are then disentangled, meaning straightened, and spinning is done using a loom. The thread is twisted to make it as strong and especially as even as possible. Finally, after all these steps, the fibers are interlaced with weft threads to obtain wool threads that are more or less flexible and thick for their future use. This soft wool is then dedicated to knitting women's wool socks.

Note: wool remains one of the most used fibers in textiles today, notably because of its insulating thermal properties. Women's wool socks retain 80% air in their volume to keep feet warm but also dry when temperatures are low.

How to Choose Among Our Women's Wool Socks

The wool pairs at Mes Chaussettes Rouges are true winter wardrobe essentials! Why? Because they are warm socks ideal for wearing in cold temperatures: they are soft, thick, and particularly comfortable! High-quality wool socks to bring you softness and warmth. A selection of premium, durable, and elegant sock pairs to keep you stylish this winter. Colored, plain, or printed, our women's wool socks are trendy and complement all your looks!

We offer 5 ranges of women's wool socks knitted with wools of different thicknesses to suit all needs:

  • The wool Daphné: with a basket weave knit, this wool provides warmth and comfort to mid-calf women's socks (short socks) as well as a soft touch.
  • The mid-calf Mazarin and Gammarelli in merino wool: a classic to have in your wardrobe to match all your winter shoes! These women's merino wool socks are particularly fine, soft, and flexible. One advantage of merino wool is that it is thermoregulating: it will keep you warm without making you sweat! This material is ideal for your socks because it is also antibacterial and non-itchy.
  • The Norwegian socks from Bresciani: an essential accessory in case of low temperatures! These original mid-calf (high wool socks for women) and short socks, very soft and comfortable, will accompany you in the mountains, during après-ski, but also in the city, at home, or in roomy shoes.
  • The blends in wool & cashmere Mazarin: these women's wool socks have a medium thickness, without ribbing, are very flexible, and will perfectly fit the shape of your calves. The excellent insulating properties of wool combined with cashmere make them perfect socks to keep your feet warm. These mid-calf wool socks offer exceptional warmth and softness – just like their colors!

Caring for Your Women's Wool Socks

Your women's wool socks require special washing precautions if you want to maintain the quality of your pairs over the long term!

You have two options:

  • Machine washing your wool socks: protect the material by placing your pairs in a laundry bag to avoid contact with the machine drum. Then, wash them using a special wool or delicate cycle, preferably at 30°C, with a very low spin speed (maximum 600 rpm);
  • Hand washing your wool socks: when in doubt, this is always the best option! In this case, opt for washing in cold or lukewarm water (around 30°C) and gently knead your socks with a mild detergent or soap without pulling too much to preserve the natural shape of the fibers;
  • For drying, we recommend natural drying by laying your socks flat so the fibers naturally tighten and your socks look like new. And be careful, we strongly advise against using a tumble dryer!
