# The leather belt, a fashion accessory

Without a trained eye, it is difficult when looking at several belts to separate the wheat from the chaff. We will discuss here the different criteria that will allow you to choose your belt without making a mistake.

The leather belt is probably one of the most popular fashion accessories among men, both for its utilitarian functions and its aesthetic qualities. Now present in the majority of wardrobes, this men's accessory is essential. While fans of classic style may prefer suspenders, wearing a belt is generally preferred. The uses are numerous:

  • The classic formal belt: This dressed leather belt is the most common (black or brown belt). It is indeed the easiest to wear daily, whether in a corporate environment or more casually. It is generally matched to the color of the shoes and enhances an outfit without exaggeration. We offer unisex belts (leather belts for men and women).
  • The casual belt: The casual leather belt is worn more relaxed with informal outfits. It often accompanies jeans, chinos, and other pants. It is often distinguished by the choice of buckles, shapes (notably braided belts), materials (suede, velvet, wool, cotton…). The casual belt comes in many different forms.

# Choosing the leather

This is undoubtedly the most important selection criterion for luxury leather belts, just as it is for all other leather goods! Poor quality leather tends to deteriorate very quickly, especially with unsightly creases, which, although inevitable, will be much more pronounced. Buying a quality leather belt means buying full-grain leather, with beautiful hides.

Mazarin belts are available in calf leather, one of the finest leathers which, although classic, remains a timeless choice for crafting beautiful products.

Mazarin also offers exotic leather belts. You will find, in particular, slightly varnished alligator belts, whose skin comes from the animal’s belly area. You can also find genuine ostrich belts. These two exceptional materials bring elegance and perfectly controlled originality to your outfits.

It is also important to ensure the belt is supple leather. To do this, once placed on a support in the middle, you should appreciate the curve. This will tell you if it is indeed a supple leather belt. All our men's belts are lined with cowhide leather, thus maintaining a nice suppleness.

# Choosing the right size for your leather belt

Here is a simplified size guide. The choice of belt size is defined by two criteria. First, you must choose the width in proportion to your body. Naturally, except for certain body types, you should be careful not to choose a belt that is too thin or too wide. Ideally, a wide belt is generally between 30 and 40 mm.

Mazarin belts are offered with a width of 35 mm, to find a balance that will suit both men and women looking to build formal or casual outfits.

How to measure your waist for a leather belt?

Take a measuring tape. The waist circumference corresponds to the horizontal circumference of the body. It is measured at the narrowest part of your abdomen, slightly below or above your navel. Prefer above if you wear high-waisted dress pants.

If you already have a belt that fits you perfectly, you can also take the measurements directly from it!

Good to know: Your leather belt is adjustable! We adjust its size before shipping to save you this cobbler operation. In case of a change in body shape, a good cobbler will be able to make an additional hole so you can comfortably tighten your adjustable belt without aesthetic loss.

The leather belt buckle

The choice of buckle is crucial! It is a matter of elegance and caution. The first selection criterion is, of course, the type of buckle. There are several types of buckles, from formal to more original with various shapes (square, rectangular, round buckle…).

The one offered by Mazarin is a simple prong buckle that you can find either rectangular or with slightly more rounded corners. It is a buckle suited for formal leather belts, whereas a round buckle is more casual.

The second selection criterion, although often overlooked, is the choice of metal! Even if at first glance it is difficult to determine the quality of the materials used on a metal buckle, its choice remains essential for the buckle to maintain a nice appearance over time. It is not uncommon to see oxidation stains appear quickly on leather belt buckles.

The buckles of Mazarin leather belts are made of chrome-plated brass, a luxury metal known for its anti-abrasion, anti-corrosion, and anti-oxidation properties. The finish color is defined in harmony with that of the belts.

Recognizing good finishes on a leather belt

The devil is in the details! Or in our case, at least in the finishes. As with any handcrafted product, the quality of the finishes is an excellent indicator of the overall quality of a leather belt. Regarding men's and women's belts, particular attention is paid to the quality of the perforations. These must be clean and round, without rough edges.

The edge finishing is also crucial. It is refined with light sanding, the edges are slightly rounded and evened out. The edge can also be burned, oiled, and dyed to achieve a rounded effect.

# How to match your leather belt

Matching your belt with the rest of your outfit depends on the level of formality you want to achieve.

For a formal outfit, the rule is (ideally) to always match your leather belt with your shoes, meaning having a belt of the same material and color (black belt with black shoes, light brown belt with light brown shoes…). For more casual outfits, you can definitely have fun matching your belt with other details of your outfit (the color of a shirt, a sweater, or even pants, for example).

For variations in styles, such as braided belts, matching is perfectly possible as long as you don’t take too many liberties with the previous rule!

If, on the contrary, you want to build a less formal outfit with shoes, then you can also take more liberties with belts, using different colors or mixing materials (smooth calfskin paired with suede, for example).

A dark brown leather belt falls into an intermediate style category: it pairs well with both formal and casual looks. However, avoid pairing belts of varied colors with black shoes.

Note: We advise you to avoid wearing a formal leather belt with sneakers to prevent mixing styles too much.

# Caring for a leather belt

To ensure the leather maintains good shape and naturally develops a patina over time, here are some care tips:

  • Roll your belt after wearing it, and don’t wear it every day! This will help it regain its straight shape as much as possible. Ideally, hang it on a support;
  • Do not leave it near heat sources as the leather may dry out;
  • Avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight (especially in summer), as rays can lighten the color.

It is not necessary to care for your belt with products as you would for a pair of shoes. Every 6 months, you can use a cotton chamois or a slightly damp cloth to clean your belt and remove dust and surface dirt.

Tips: If the leather is particularly dry, you can nourish it with a solvent-free cleaning milk. And if you want to restore some shine and color, you can also apply a pigmented cream from time to time.
